Buyer Ch. 18: Closing Day

Congratulations! At long last, your journey from buyer to homeowner will be complete.

As you prepare to head over to the title company’s office for closing, be sure to remember to bring photo ID and your cashier’s check. And if the title company requested you bring anything else, by all means, follow their lead.

Once you arrive, finalizing the paperwork, obtaining copies for your files and completing the deed transfer will typically take 30-60 minutes. It used to be almost certain that sellers and buyers would attend closings together, where they would typically be meeting in person for the first time. In recent years, it has become more common for sellers to pre-sign their documents and not attend the closing on their sale, and this went from trend to rule once covid invaded our lives, so you may not get to meet them. Nevertheless, I’ll be sure to help get you everything you need such as all the keys, garage door openers, codes to keypads, answers to any questions you may have of them, and other tricks and tips the sellers may have for us.

After your closing, be sure to keep all your signed documents in a safe place. You will also want to make sure to schedule time to change your address on all government-issued ID and get your new address to your credit card companies, banks, and those with whom you may have subscriptions.
